CLASSIFICATION OF SUBSTANCE (MATTER)

Matter is usually defined as anything that has mass and occupies space.

Classification of substance based on states of matter:
 Solids, liquids, and gases.

Classification of substance based on the compositions :
Elements, compounds, and mixtures.

Classification of substance based on the acidity of a solution :
Acids, Bases, and Salts.



But for now, focus on the material that we will study is the classification of a substance based on its composition.

ELEMENTS
The properties of an element:
    An element is a pure substance (single matter) CAN’T BE broken down into simpler substances by chemical reaction.  
     An element consists of only one kind of atom.
An element is made of tiny particles called atoms. 
Atom is the smallest part of an element.

Atoms of one element with another element are different.
The difference lies in the number of protons or electrons contained in the atom.
For example, you can see it on the periodic table:
